Meet Kyle

Seven years in Colorado greenhouses, now in your living room

I am Kyle Lutze. I own Colorado Plant Care, and I am the person who shows up.

I got my first houseplant when I was ten, and that was more or less that. It turned into a career: seven years working in Colorado's greenhouses and garden centers before I started doing this on my own.

I ran the houseplant department at Tagawa Gardens for three years, choosing what we brought in and keeping hundreds of plants healthy on the floor. Then I spent two and a half years designing and installing plants for events, and teaching terrarium and houseplant workshops, which is where I learned that most people do not need more plants, they need someone to explain the one they already have. Most recently I managed the greenhouse at City Floral in Denver, running the growing systems and the team.

Somewhere in there I did a mycology course at CU Boulder, spent a season on a seed collection project banking native Colorado seed, and got my Certified Colorado Gardener qualification through Colorado State University Extension: over a hundred hours covering botany, soil, plant pathology, and pest management.

The through line is diagnosis. Years of triaging a greenhouse full of plants teaches you to read one fast, and to know which problems are fixable. That is most of what I do now.

Why I started this

Almost nobody has a black thumb

Working retail, the same conversation happened over and over. Somebody would come in holding a dying plant, apologizing for killing it. Nearly every time it was not them. It was a plant sold for a window it was never going to survive, and nobody had told them.

So the job I actually wanted was the one that happens in your house, in front of the window the plant lives in. That is Colorado Plant Care.

Certified Colorado Gardener

Certificate program through Colorado State University Extension. Over 100 hours of coursework in plant science, soil health, pest management, and sustainable practice.

Former house plant manager

Seven years in Colorado's greenhouses and nurseries, including three running a garden center's house plant department and, most recently, managing a Denver greenhouse. Thousands of plants, and every problem a plant can have.

5.0 on Google

37 and counting, across residential and commercial clients around the Denver metro. Most of my work comes from referrals.

The rest of the operation

A small team, on purpose

There are two of us. Keeping it small caps how many clients we take on, and that cap is why the care stays specific. When you call, you get me, not an account manager.

What I believe about plants

Three things, and everything else follows

Pick for the light you have

Not the light you wish you had, and not the light on the plant tag. This is where most plant failures are decided, months before anything looks wrong.

Set it up to succeed

Right pot size, right soil, right drainage, right spot, away from the vent. A plant set up properly is forgiving. A plant set up badly needs constant rescuing.

Care consistently, before there is a problem

Watering to what the plant needs rather than to a schedule, checking for pests while they are still invisible, and adjusting as the seasons turn.
