Repotting service

Plant repotting service in Denver

Root-bound, crusted, or just too big to lift. We bring the right mix and the right size pot, do it at your place, and clean up. Priced by pot size, from $10, and free of the trip charge when it happens during a scheduled visit.

Why have it done

Most repots we see were done one size too big

Repotting looks simple, and the two mistakes are simple too: too big a pot, and the wrong mix. A plant moved from an 8 inch pot into a 14 inch one sits in soil its roots cannot reach, which stays wet for weeks in a Denver winter and rots the plant from the middle. Bagged potting soil makes it worse, because it is mostly peat and holds water far longer than the dry air outside the pot suggests.

So we go up one size, mix in bark and perlite to suit the plant, check the roots while the plant is out, and trim anything soft. You get the plant back in a pot it will grow into, with a watering number for the new, bigger volume of soil.

  • One size up, in a mix suited to the plant, not whatever was in the bag
  • Roots checked and trimmed, rot dealt with on the spot
  • We bring pots to choose from, or use yours
  • Done on a tarp at your place, cleaned up, old soil taken away

Two ways to book it

During a maintenance visit. If you are already on a regular maintenance schedule, repots are added to the visit at the labor price above. No trip charge.

As a standalone visit. One trip, as many pots as you have. The $85 visit covers the drive, the tarp and the cleanup, and each pot is priced from the table above. With a dozen pots the labor usually comes to less than the pottery.

Larger than 16 inches, trees, and anything that takes two people are quoted by photo. Send one and we will reply with a number.

Repotting questions

How do I know a plant needs repotting?
Roots circling the bottom or coming out of the drainage holes, water running straight through, the plant drying out much faster than it used to, or a white crust on the soil. The repotting guide goes through each sign.
When is the best time of year?
Spring, going into the growing season. The exception is root rot, which we deal with the day we find it, whatever the month.
Do I have to buy pots from you?
No. We can use yours, as long as it drains. If you want options we bring a few in the right size and you pick, with the price on each.
Will my plant droop afterward?
Often, for a couple of weeks. That is normal. The one thing not to do is water it more. You will have a written watering number for the new pot.
Where do you repot?
Anywhere in the Denver metro, from Broomfield down to Castle Rock. Denver, Lakewood, Aurora, Centennial, Englewood and Littleton are the usual stops.

Send a photo of the pot

A photo of the plant and its pot is enough for a price. The phone consultation is free, and most repots are booked within the week.
